Our Season 2, Episode 7 is Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
Based on the iconic August Wilson play, the movie centres around two superstar performances from the incomparable Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman. Tragically, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom was Boseman's final role before his death in August this year aged just 43.
A story of race, power, sexuality and cultural appropriation in the 1920s, it's unsurprisingly as relevant today as it when the play was written in 1984. As Nadine Deller writes in Sight and Sound, the narrative explores, "the long history of exploitation and appropriation of African-American culture, which has been both fetishised and denigrated, loved and loathed".
We're really excited to see what is sure to be a film that's much talked-about when Oscars season rolls around - it premieres on Netflix this Friday and we'll be hosting a TS Movie Club screening on the day it's released.
