- Our Movie Club hosted a live watch-along of Dunkirk on Friday 24th April
Dunkirk follows the epic true story of the evacuation of of Allied soldiers who were cut off and surrounded by the German Army at the beaches and harbour of Dunkirk.
Nolan’s 2017 depiction of one of the most famous moments in World War 2 won three Oscars and is the highest-grossing WW2 film of all time. Beautifully shot by Hoyte Van Hoytema using a number of incredible innovations, Dunkirk both looks and feels absolutely breathtaking.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the film is that it alternates between three different periods of time, each involving separate groups of people – on the beach with the infantry, the evacuation by the Navy and civilian boats, and air combat from the pilots.
This non-linear narrative is a signature style of Nolan’s and he uses it to great effect in Dunkirk as we simultaneously watch what happens one week, one day, and one hour from evacuation – each story thread building to one incredibly tense crescendo.
